They called it as beta because beta means no more features. It is just that and only that. They don't have to follow the GBP as not all beta's are public.

@ Diamond - That's precisely what I said & meant...

Why did it have to be called as Beta, when it was not an open development ??
It should have continued with Alpha itself.
The process would have been same but, only the name of the process would have stayed as Alpha.

If it had to be named beta then, it had to be opened to public, as per the General Beta Protocol (GBP).

@ Guess Me ...

You honestly have no idea how a closed beta works. The things you are comparing it to were open betas, which were done after closed testing. When Astra goes to open beta all the big bugs will already be gone. Beta testing is not something you do when there are no bugs left.

Your point about collecting data from users is true but makes no sense in a feature locked program. Comparing Trillian to Yahoo is silly, their internal testing team is as big as the entire group of people testing Astra right now. That is why there are still so many bugs left.

No matter what it means on other software.... here is what beta means on Trillian:

" Beta " - A feature locked development state which 100% of the focus has now been put on fixing all bugs identified during the alpha period, and any new bugs that may arise.

Writing a whole bunch of entries on this blog and arguing with people over the name is just silly, let it go.

@ agnostic - I meant the beta releases of most softwares or chat clients that are out to public are without bugs / with minimal bugs.
A very good example of that is Yahoo messenger, which was in 9.0 beta stage for over 6 months.

The main cause for releasing beta by software developers is nothing but collecting random usage data/stats from a wide range of users, who may or may not face bugs while using it.

However, in this case of Astra, though it says Beta, it is not out to public for download & testing & hence, it is not into the suite of protocol that are followed by other developers (based on beta release).

Therfore, I said that since there are still more bugs to be fixed in this Beta release (Build 88), it shouldn't have been named Beta & instead should have continued with Alpha stage for some more time.

@ Matrix - As I wrote above, I didn't anticipate so many bugs to show up in this Beta release.
It is very unlikely that a Beta release has so many bugs.

Not really a "bug" per se, which is why I can't post it to bugzilla, but whenever I have a Trillian open when shutting down the program (be it a container window, a single conversation, the contact list window or a chat history window), I get a crash error. If I close all windows completely, including the contact list back to the system tray (i.e. not minimized to the task bar), and then exit from the system tray, it works fine.

What is up with a crash error when I told it to shutdown? It's not crashing, it's closing!

All in all, great job gang at CS. I was in the alpha group, all the bugs I found were fixed promptly. Now onto beta. Excellent.

@ agnostic -

Beta phase in most softwares are released to public & hence, all errors/bugs should have been solved to release it to the public (literally) or near to releasing to the public (in this case).

Alpha phase is mainly used for identifying bugs & solving them for which we had a very intensive testing over 87 builds.
