Trillian for Windows: A quick fix for Google Talk! (4.2 Build 25)

Build 25 is going out today for the Trillian 4.x branch to address the recent Google Talk “off the record” issue. There were no other changes between 24 and 25. You should receive the offer to update the next time you restart Trillian or can always grab it from our download page. We will address this bug in 5.0 with the upcoming build 30 and will also get the bugfix into the next Mac build. We know it’s been a long wait for the next 5.0 build and we can’t wait to unveil it – thanks!

I am really looking forward to build 30 for Trillian 5. It’s been a long wait, 2 months give or take a week. Anyways, thanks for the info and keep up the good work, it is appreciated. :)

  2. Gary Smit Says:

    Hello Everyone,

Keep up the super great work, so far it is working perfectly and I have it hooked up to many services.

Thanks again and have a great day,

    Gary

  3. Richard (InvisoSniperX) Says:

Thanks for the update… Looks like Build 30 will be a big announcement, with Pictures, and Features, and Unicorns!!! I cant wait. :P

  4. Bram Weiser Says:

    Ladies and Gentlemen:

There’s a button seen during the installation process that says, “Install and Restart”, but this is misleading.

It’s easy to think that this means that the computer(!) will need to restart after installation succeeds, but, apparently, only Trillian needs to restart.

Maybe a different word (“relaunch”?) or slightly expanded text “…restart (or relaunch) Trillian” would help?

Please make this change in future releases, and thanks.

    Sincerely,
    Bram Weiser

  5. Bram Weiser Says:

    Correction…

After relaunching(?) Trillian, it didn’t log in to Astra successfully, no matter what I did, so I shut my PC down then booted it up again, and it then logged in just fine…so I’m not sure just what Cerulean’s intent was when saying “Install and Restart”.

Still, could someone please speak to this?

    Thanks,
    Bram Weiser

  6. SilenceIsGolden Says:

Bram — don’t you think it’s common wording that’s used here? Whenever there needs to be a reBOOT of the operating system it’s called … welll that: a reboot. It’s the technical term for that procedure. If the “install and restart” is even on one single button, as it’s the case here, it should be clear that it refers only to the program in question. You might want to look into word usage / common technical terms in English (if it’s not your native language). We might not like some wording conventions that are in place at different places, but it’s a bit harsh to criticize one single software developer for this and urge them to stray.

  7. LXXIII Says:

I’m having trouble with MSN Messenger and Facebook Chat in Trillian 4.2.

MSN: Many of my messages aren’t received by the people I’m talking to. This is mainly an issue at the beginning of a conversation.

Facebook Chat: People keep telling me that I randomly go offline/online. I also fail to receive many messages from people. Also, occasionally my online-list stops updating entirely.

  8. dmcknig208 Says:

    “Bram — don’t you think it’s common wording that’s used here?”-SilenceIsGolden

Actually, no, SIG, “Restart” is the term Microsoft uses, so a reference to “restart” would indicate that the computer is going to shut down and start up again. That;s what you see, for instance, when Adobe installs an update. It DOES say “Restart” — which shuts down and then reboots your computer. I’m pretty certain if memory serves that the same is true for Mac OS. You and I may reference boot and reboot all the time, but if the producer of the OS calls it “Restart” then it’s confusing to the user to use that term in a different way without being more clear.

  9. Phil Says:

There is a glitch with tabs in minimal view. Sometimes when I get more than one conversation in hotmail, the tabs white out and I can only see the topmost conversation. There is no solution to this and I ofter have to close the entire window to remedy this, losing the unseen messages in the process.

  10. Philip Says:

@SilenceIsGolden (in regards to @Bram) – Actually, Windows uses the word Restart when it means reboot the system. That’s the verbage used when you do a Windows Update
And Bram, the update worked fine for me without a system reboot/restart/power off and on

  11. Lim Says:

Trillian is very helpfull…… Thanks for free ……

  12. wpisteve Says:

Any chance of a Windows Phone 7 app? I would love to have Trillian working on my mobile phone!

  13. Bram Weiser Says:

    Dear SilenceIsGolden,

I use Windows on a PC (maybe you do, too?) so I’m used to having to, say, install an update from Microsoft (or some other software provider) and then being told to “restart”, which, in those contexts, clearly means a need for the computer (not just a single piece of software) to power-down, then power-up again.

The point is simple, SIG…use the same word(s) to mean the same thing(s)…period. So, it’s Cerulean, the “single software developer”, in your words, that’s apparently using “restart” in an unconventional way.

  14. sm Says:

    facebook crashes :(

  15. Ian Says:

Glad to hear an update to 5.0 is coming. The off the record thing is obviously pretty annoying, but the issue where the tabs don’t update to show you have new messages in them is also pretty bad..

  16. Chad Says:

Yup, I agree with Bram. “Restart” refers to the OS. If in doubt, look on your Windows start button under “shut down” options. It doesn’t say “reboot,” it says “restart.”

  17. Mike C Says:

After installing, and launching Trillian 4.2.0.25, I get a RunDLL error dialog:

“There was a problem starting vistaelevate64.dll”
The specified module could not be found.

Win 7 x64 system, up to date. Install user has admin privs.

I install via update, via manual install, and uninstall/reinstall. All had experienced the same failure to launch.

    I can launch later though.

  18. fer Says:

xD its really funny to read u had errors for restarting the computer. I almost did the same. A “Install and Relaunch” would be better.

  19. dwlarson Says:

How about just saying “Install and Restart Trillian”? That would avoid confusion (I wondered the same thing about the “restart”).

  20. Tim Herrick Says:

I am also having the problem of many of my texts not being received by the person I am sending to. This has been going on since V4 came out.

  21. JackpotMonkey Says:

I too am having the facebook chat issue, people are continually telling me that they cannot carry on a convo because i keep going on and offline

  22. Ryan Ghourley Says:

Please fix the facebook issue on trillian so my message sent on the site will stop forwarding to trillian under different people account.

  23. Ryan Ghourley Says:

I guess this update fixes the facebook issue. Thank you. :)

  24. Yavatar Says:

Acrobat only requires a (system) restart if you have one of more their helper apps installed so they can update them. Flash does not require a restart. Other things are questionable whether they REALLY need a restart or it is just poor implementation integrating into the system. Microsoft tends to want to restart your system because they like to integrate everything with your OS… which it doesn’t need to do (read up on IE in the EU – IE is removed from Windows).

We think of restart as system restart because of Microsoft and a number of apps out there that insist on rebooting your system even when it isn’t necessary. A restart that involves a reboot shouldn’t be the norm but only the occasional need.

  25. Virginia Says:

Thank you a lot for Trillian. I find it awsome. Thanks a lot!

  26. Jenn Says:

I’ve been using trillian about a year now or so. Got a friend into using it as well. We both talk over msn on it. We frequently get issues with one getting a msg the other is offline and can’t recieve messages at this time. Although we are both logged in on our ends. Talking to others at the same time. We reboot trillian both several times and at times that works, others we have to wait till the next day or so till it allow’s us to chat again. I know it’s easy.. say get another messenger logged in and use it too. Well too me that’s not how its supposed to be. The bug should be fixed. Another thing, after the Update tonight, I got several of them offline messages at once on login. Any idea’s? Otherwise I LOVE this program.

  27. baschtl Says:

Facebook chat still don´t work: “facebook chat found en error and couldn´t continue”

  28. Someone516 Says:

omg, that gtalk thing is soooo annoying, is there any way to copy over the gtalk plugin from trillian4 (b25) to 5?

  29. szir Says:

    I agree with Yavatar.
I have an “Adobe Reader Update” window in front of me that has a button: “Restart Now” and reads: “You must restart your system before using Adobe Reader”. It should continue with “because we are stupid and write s***y software all the time”. And it sais “You must”! F** you! “Well, it’s our fault, but it’s your problem”.
A software (that is not part of the OS) should never ever provide a Reboot/OS restart button (that a user might accidently click)!
It might show a window that sais “Sorry for the inconvenience, please restart the system before using our software”.
I’m not even going into why a Portable Document viewer should be that complicated… I know it’s free so I should just STFU, but still…
I hope cerulean studios won’t make these mistakes…

  30. Mike Says:

Id stil like to see Cam features ,.

  31. countach Says:

    Thanks! Now works fine!

  32. Artur Borioli Says:

Português – Brasil : Bom dia. Após upgrade da versão, fui verificar se a webcam funcionava e realmente ainda não funciona. O restante funciona bem, respostas automática, aviso de e-mail e etc. Quando poderemos utilizar este recurso ?
Inglês : Good morning. After the upgrade version, I checked if the webcam works and really does not help. The rest works fine, automatic responses, warning e-mail and so on. When we use this resource?

  33. Tom Pearce Says:

I have issues with connections to Facebook, appearing to ‘disconnect’ off and on. Folks on Facebook, see I am no longer ‘online’ and vice versa. Is this something that you are trying to fix? Also, I have not recently tried, but I had issues trying to start Video Chats with AOL and YAHOO thru Trillian in the past. I gave up when I wanted to video Chat and used the OTHER IM program (AIM/YAHOO) to do these chats. Have you been working on this issue also? Otherwise I love Trillian!!

  34. Matt Stevens Says:

I’ve been using Trillian for four years now. I love the product!

  35. Gerhard Says:

If I start Trillian I get always nerving error messages:
“unable to locate file for proxy engine – literals will not function during this load. Please ensure that your language pack is installed correctly”. I am rather sure that my german language pack is installed correctly….

I hoped that this new version has fixed that problem. But it isn´t.

  36. ooofest Says:

Unfortunately, the Google Talk status of “Invisible” still does not seem to work under v4.2 – a quick test showed that my Google ID, which was logged in via Trillian v4.2 and set to “Invisible”, showed up as “Available” to other Google Talk users who has me in their contact lists.

I’ve been waiting for some time for this update and participated in bug report 9030 that was related to this fix attempt – would be willing to test any further updates, if desired.

  37. Bobby Says:

Hey I could not get the update to install. I have administer rights on my computert and it told me that I do not hav the permissions to install this. It poppped up in a trillian window. What Happend?

  38. bortscht Says:

would be better if you do something about that damn spambots. im not the only one who is constantly invited by those. most of the time its natha… or sunnygirl…

  39. jpfrizzle Says:

Install and Relaunch, or Install and Restart Trillian would be unique. What about, Install and Start Over?

  40. DiamondNRG Says:

I do think there is a lot of humor in the fact that all of a sudden 10 people are worried about the “Install and Restart” button… its been there for years on this program… did you have no opinion then?

Sure some people could confuse it to mean that Trillian is one of those programs that requires a restart of the OS (which it does NOT) … so yes I suppose it should say Install and Restart Trillian … but that is going to be one long ugly button!

I have the exact same problems. AND my set MSN avatar icons never show up to anyone. I’ve tested the v5 beta, same issues there. I will not upgrade until these things are solved. In Trillian 4.

  42. savejina Says:

Love how quickly the problem was addressed. I was just thinking of how annoying the “off the record” was and then it was magically fixed. Thanks, you guys rock!

  43. P1h3r1e3s13 Says:

re: “There were no other changes between 24 and 25.”
Do you realize just how useless that statement is when you never had a changelog for 24? (Or 23. Or 22….)
You’re big kids now. I think it’s time you got a real changelog to replace your inconsistently-updated blog.

  44. Erictrials Says:

    yo,
i want to make video chat in icq ;)

  45. DiamondNRG Says:

@P1h3r1e3s13 … kinda funny your name is very annoying and you want them to be big kids… anyways there was no changelog for 23 or 24 because they were also single bug fixes. All the rest of them have had changelogs.

  46. Anon Says:

    As ooofest kindly pointed out:

the bugfix that was the very reason for this update is NOT working. :)

Please comfirm this observation somewhere so that users don’t feel neglected.

    Thank you.

    Dear DiamondNRG (Feb16, 9:52am),

Your posts in many Forum threads that I’d posted in have typically been on-point and helpful, thank you…but, to address the point you made here…

I personally never noticed the specific wording as such (it MIGHT well have said, “Install and Restart” for several updates, for all I know…but it simply never registered with me before I saw it in v4.2, Build 25). Even if it isn’t new to Build 25, it’s still, in my view (and, apparently, some other post-ers’ views, too), something that should be changed for purposes of clarity.

    Thanks,
    Bram

P.S. Aside to DiamondNRG: I know of at least one (1) other Forum thread where your input would be welcome and valuable…it’s one of mine in the Windows Forum here that I posted within the past several weeks. I hope that I’ll get to read your thoughts there soon, too, thanks.

  55. Karen Says:

In response to the above about the “Install and Restart” verbiage. I do work in IT and am familiar with the differences between “restart” and “reboot”. I also thought it might restart my computer (not just Trillian) due to the verbiage. There are software packages that do require a restart of the computer to complete the install.

A non-technical or basic user may not understand the difference. An application should be written with the user in mind as well as industry standards, not just technical terminology. Clear verbiage is not a “deviation” from conventional terms.

  56. robert Says:

really you guys should include mxit aswell

  57. klymax Says:

Based on what I’ve found on another site, this whole issue of the “off the record” is related to Google’s default setting of saving chat history. So does this Trillian fix give the option to disable chat history or does it just hide the message.

  58. Marcello Says:

Thank you for your amazing program!

I’ve been a Trillian user for several years and recommend it to all my friends.

  59. beyondpalefires Says:

As far as the reboot/restart issue: I have ALWAYS understood Restart meant restart the program, and anything I have that means reboot SAYS either reboot or ‘restart windows’.

Furthermore; if you KNOW that Trillian means to restart the application, then in future upgrades, it shouldn’t be an issue, should it? Seems if it’s such vast confusion, then EVERY software maker needs to be made aware and change it’s ways.

  60. Jasper Says:

In this build it is not possible to add people on the MSN network. I do the usual adding procedure, and it just does not work. No error or nothing. The person just does not get added. Doesn’t matter if the person added me first, or I him. It’s not just one contact either. And it worked fine in the earlier build before this update.. build 22 I think.

I realize that this will probably be fixed, but come on the builds are coming with so far between now… I can’t wait months to be able to add persons to MSN… it’s simply not possible. With the times between builds you should test them better as to not let bugs like this in. I am probably forced to switch client now unless a hotfix comes out, which seems naive at best.

  61. Robert Says:

Restart/reboot: a button that does it for you will help ;)

Reïnstalled the 4.xx until the 5 beta is being upped to 5.0.0.30. Curious about the releasenotes and get bugs solved (else it would be a 5.0.1 right? ;) Especially the GTalk one and the Twitter that goes mad/forgets the ‘read’ status.

  62. Paul G. Says:

@SilenceIsGolden: You’re very rude. And mostly wrong.

“Restart” is the word used by Windows for the process of shutting down then restarting the computer. It’s the most commonly used term for this. And “relaunch” is a fairly common expression for restarting a program.

Yes, “reboot” may be the more precise term — for old school techies and people reared on DOS. But not everyone in the world is an IT specialist. Some of us, like myself, for example, have graduate degrees in English….

  63. samira Says:

    thank you

  64. Ryan Says:

You don’t need to change the wordage from ‘restart’ to something else, just add the word Trillian.

    ‘restart Trillian’

  65. Barry Demchak Says:

Great news … now, how about a fix that allows us to upgrade our Skypes to the current Skype version, and still have Trillian’s Skype plugin work. Is there progress on this, too?

  66. Jeremy Says:

Any ETA on build 30? The GTalk bug is driving me batty.

  67. Allan Says:

Even with latest update, Trillian KEEPS FORGETTING the Skype Silent Mode. I constantly have to go in and click “Enable Skype Silent Mode” – can’t that be fixed?? It’s so annoying with two chat windows popping up….

  68. Keith Harrison Says:

Hi team … thank you very much for your hard work on Build 30 … the gtalk bug is crazy annoying … and I almost just turned off Trillian because of it, temporarily that is. But I just can’t … you guys are the best and I love the Pro version! I do wish that there were more skins available though. :-)

  69. M Says:

I still can’t use MSN on trillian, and this is pissing me off.

  70. smw Says:

@M: Are you receiving a particular error message with MSN? You can drop me an email at smw@ceruleanstudios.com if you’d like to troubleshoot directly. This goes for anyone currently unable to connect to MSN through Trillian.

  71. Scream81 Says:

@ Keith Harrison: Maybe you haven’t looked carefully. There is quite a lot of Trillian stuff available already. Take a look here: http://developer.ceruleanstudios.com/index.php/Category:Skinning_Showcase

  72. M Says:

@smw It just drops my connection constantly. No error messages. My connection just goes dark and sometimes it reconnects by itself, others I have to reconnect and it just boots me off again.

  73. Dimitri Says:

Guys, please fix GTalk bugs or release build 30 already. I’m using GTalk daily a lot, and this bug is driving me nuts. It’s been 9 days already with it, its totally ruining experience, so – please.

  74. LXXIII Says:

Yea it really sucks when the people @ Cerulean start work on a newer version without dealing with the major bugs of a previous build.

  75. KM Says:

I am a long time Trillian user and absolutely love the product. I’ve been using it since 3.x and have paid for both 4.x and 5.x. This bug in 5.x *really* needs to be fixed – it’s become so bad that I have stopped using the program entirely in favor of just using gmail’s interface (which is awful). Please, please, please fix this bug ASAP.

  76. David Says:

Yes, I get it. This conversation is no longer off the record. Please release an emergency patch – this is just plain ridiculous.

  78. E. Frederick Pony, Esq. Says:

Consider this another request to either release build 30 or put out an emergency patch for 5.x and for the Mac. The “no longer off the record” bug spam is ridiculously annoying.

  79. yauhui Says:

I think it’ll be nice if I didn’t have to re-add my chat views every time I update Trillian. It’s annoying.

  80. Jason Duval Says:

When will this issue be resolved in the mac version of Trillian? We are having the same issue with the google talk constant “off the record” entries showing up in multiples between actual chat messages and it’s become very annoying.

  81. agnostic-stigmata Says:

    @ Jason Duval.

If you look in the forums you’ll see that the developers are aware of the issue on the mac version as well, and they said it will be fixed in the next release. It even mentions that in this blog entry. With that being said, i assume the next mac build will be released within the next week or two.

  82. Cliff Meyers Says:

I am forced to switch back to Digsby until you fix this issue in the beta. C’mon guys, this isn’t just an annoying bug, it basically makes chat unusable for GTalk users

  83. Sean Bryant Says:

I am dying for a new update…skype new version fixes, no longer off the record, I am really bummed its taking this long, especially for us paying customers!

  84. DiamondNRG Says:

@Cliff, stop being stupid, they already fixed it in 4.2.0.25 and you should use that not Trillian 5 if the bugs in it annoy you.

@Sean … hmm wow same damn answer… use the stable release 4.2.0.25 which has both those things fixed.

  85. Sean Bryant Says:

@DiamondNRG I am using Trillian 5.x which doesn’t have a stable release and I am using the latest version. I would rather not go back to 4.x as I have become so accustomed to its nicer features.

I think this discussion about “restart” and “reboot” is kind of idiot. Not everybody is an “expert” of Internet. Why not simply speak “english” ? You can say “restart ICQ”, and everybody is happy. Think also about the foreigners who try to read english… must they be “experts” tu use Trillian ?
By they way, it’s true that it’s a free program and very nice to have and so on. But I didn’t like to be “obliged” to update by the total faillure of ICQ. I really don’t like “forced updates”.
