Trillian for Windows: Status Update!
It’s been a little over a month since our last Trillian for Windows build and we wanted to give everyone a status update. We’ve been busy fixing bugs as always but most of our energy has been going towards provisioning and testing the activity history synchronization servers. This is a very complex project that touches nearly all of our code – both clients and servers – and so has been taking additional effort to deploy. Rest assured that we are hard at work and hope to finish coding and deployment this month! We will likely have a few planned downtimes as well, during which time certain services will be running “read only” while we upgrade certain backend components.
Additionally, we’re launching a new bundle deal with our friends at OpenCandy, which you will start to see rolled out in Trillian 5 betas. Please let us know if you run into any trouble with the new installer once it goes live. We’ll be back later this week with updates to Android, BlackBerry, and Mac!

Will the history sync only be available for paying members? And will you be able to upload existing logs?
November 1st, 2010 at 10:19 am
Looking forward to Mac and Android updates. Thanks for the post.
But please make sure that other Trillian functions don’t suffer form trying to implement the syncing. I’d rather see some fixes regarding bugs for window focus and such. I, personally, am not going to sync all my devices with 720mb of logs so please keep in mind that some users might have syncing as optional feature.
Keep up the good work!

Open candy? I guess that means I’ll have to be on the lookout for more sneaky underhanded attempts by Trillian to get me to install some crapware during setup.
November 1st, 2010 at 1:13 pm
As much as I enjoy – as a paying Trillian 5 Pro member – the features and work you put in, I’d appreciate it if the history server-sync feature was optional. I’d very much like to keep my chat history private.
Thanks!

Open candy… really? we are using Trillian in an enterprise environment and do not appriciate having to one more source for bloatware etc.

Thanks for the info CS. I’m sure it will be great!
November 1st, 2010 at 2:52 pm
Great to be hearing some news, i guess you have plenty of good ideas how the syncing will be working and i hope its gonna be great.
looking forward for the mac-build
Cheers!

Thanks for the update! Can’t Wait
November 1st, 2010 at 4:14 pm
WANT!
November 1st, 2010 at 4:50 pm
Server history sync? Does this mean I can view my BlackBerry Trillian history on my Windows Trillian because that would be surprisingly useful. Don’t really care about the other direction quite so much.

I have just installed Trillian on my PC and I was so amazed, I had to buy Pro, just to thank you. Finally a GREAT IM application. I am also using the Android version. Thank you so much.
November 1st, 2010 at 6:23 pm
So now OpenCandy will be bundled with the installer (.dll) and then it will “make a recommendation” of an application and every time that someone decides to install the application the developers make money… Is this in addition to the Ask.com toolbar or is this replacing it?
November 1st, 2010 at 7:04 pm
The fact that in Trillian 5, updating my status doesn’t actually change my Google Talk status is a huge issue for me. I’ve been told that it’s a known issue, but I feel like it something that should have been solved already, given the fundamental importance of that vs. something more esoteric like history synchronization.
November 1st, 2010 at 7:49 pm
Ben, I feel your pain. Twitter and Facebook do not get updated, either. And as of now, I see Facebook contacts popping up in a new group instead of metacontacts, AGAIN. I can’t understand how these things are not solved three months after the initial beta release.
November 1st, 2010 at 8:42 pm
Well, i was reading some about OpenCandy, and, well, as i can see it looks like a software installer that the user hasn’t asked for. I dont know how that could helpyou to spread Trillian.
November 1st, 2010 at 8:43 pm
@Ben … use Trillian 4.2 then… the whole point of 5.0 is the sync’ing… so that has to get added, and sure 5.0 has lots of bugs, it is a beta… use the stable version if the bug is too overwhelming.
@Holger, that bug of Facebook contacts duplicating is fixed and has been fixed, but the only way for you to actually not suffer from it is to physically remove ALLLLLLLLLLLL facebook contacts from your list and restart and readd your facebook connection. Then it works fine. So yes, they did fix the nasty huge really annoying very hard to fix bug, it just doesn’t clean up the mess on its own.
November 2nd, 2010 at 5:04 am
@DiamondNRG: For me, the facebook contact bug is back. Perhaps Facebook changed somethig (since Cerulean Studios has not been changing anything for a month), but I get duplicates again when I log in. I am reverting to 4.2 now, I guess.

Thanks for updating, I was kind of curious why there hasn’t been an update in so long and kind of figured it had to do with active history since I believe the blog posting after the last update stated this was the project for the next build. Glad to see that confirmed, I’m sitting tight waiting for the next update, active history will be the killer feature as far as I’m concerned.
Keep up the good work guys!
November 2nd, 2010 at 9:02 am
@Holger,
I had this “bug” when I first installed trillian and I realized that I had both a Jabber FB chat account set up, and then my regular FB acct setup in trillian. Check and see if that isn’t the case in your situation, drop Jabber if it is. You don’t need both, just setting up facebook in trillian will give you chat access, Jabber is redundant in 5.
November 2nd, 2010 at 9:14 am
I hope the really old bug with Deskscapes under windows 7 will get fixed in this update. It really sucks not to be able to see any notification pop-ups.
November 2nd, 2010 at 6:34 pm
There’s a new facebook feature – Group Chat. I haven’t checked the Facebook chat API to see if it’s updated yet to support this, but do you have any plans to support FB Groups Chat via Trillian?
November 2nd, 2010 at 9:30 pm
Good stuff….I’m just waiting for the dark themes.
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:01 am
just a question regarding future releases of trillian, will the MSN video chat be available in the future or is that something we should not expect to return?
November 3rd, 2010 at 9:22 am
Lazy guys! where is change-log for windows builds!
November 3rd, 2010 at 1:25 pm
@Omid: We post a changelog with the blog entry that accompanies the release of each build.
November 4th, 2010 at 10:50 am
Tiled view no longer available in chat window groups (only tabbed view). Am I missing something? …is this on the bug-list?
Thanks,
Ron
November 5th, 2010 at 3:55 am
Thanks for the status update. I’m really looking forward to chat history synchronization, especially if it extends to mobile platforms as well. Good job, guys!
November 10th, 2010 at 8:24 pm
Can’t say I’m looking forward to the OpenCandy junk, but the chat log syncing will be great to have. I can’t wait until that’s implemented. I currently have logs sitting on like 3 different computers, and I’ve just been too lazy to combine them using the merging tool, but it will be nice to not have to worry about that anymore.
November 12th, 2010 at 4:39 pm
What is with the announced update for MAC????????
November 13th, 2010 at 3:04 pm
FIX file transfers please! especially over MSN. They are TERRIBLY slow compared to the official client. This is such a fundamentally important feature. Why does the trillian team ignore the big tentpole features that everyone needs and wants?
November 14th, 2010 at 7:49 pm
hey guys,
is there any chance you can write a script in the installer to fix the facebook contact bug, I still have duplicates on 2 pcs and my iphone, I dont want to delete the contacts as i want the chat history.
its preventing me moving to 5.0, which I repayed my subscription for as soon as it was announced. probably shouldve tested the release first…
November 15th, 2010 at 10:39 am
FYI I believe the bugzilla showed the FB refreshing is FIXED now… so should be in the next Beta build.
November 16th, 2010 at 5:59 pm
Things that annoy the piss out of me: no easy way to see a contacts EMail address, with pidgin, thats easy, no fighting to see what the email of the person added is!
Text box for IM’s, only 1 line in height, i constantly resize it to about 4 ( “about” because trillin does resizing, and not static numbers, pisses me off to no end, another feature Pidgin has)
sending files WILL NOT WORK for me (only tested MSN)!
This of course is all on the latest v5 beta, but it doesnt matter, I still find myself using Pidgin, when i like the Trillian UI alot more besides those 3 things i said above…
November 17th, 2010 at 9:41 am
I am a paid customer for the last 3 versions. I dont want OpenCandy anywhere near my machine you better have and alternate installer for us paid customers!!!!!
November 21st, 2010 at 7:44 pm
Trillian 5 at least still does not seem to support webcam or voice chat with major IM networks (AIM, ICQ, Yahoo, MSN) as Trillian 3.1 did. Are there any plans to implement this feature in the near future or has the focus moved to things like porting it to more platforms?
November 22nd, 2010 at 9:16 pm
I don’t know if this is too big an issue but music tracking doesn’t seem to set itself the way it should for all statuses. I had to Google a fix and run the program as administrator. Honestly, that’s too much hassle, considering I’m already on my administrator account.
November 29th, 2010 at 3:24 pm
I am a paid customer — Trillian 5 does not work with Skype 5. Is it getting addressed?
November 29th, 2010 at 5:31 pm
Just over 24 Hours till the ‘End of this month’… Will we make it?
December 31st, 2010 at 11:05 am
Hey, I am looking forward to a trillian version for windows mobile 6,5. When come this on the market? Then I will subscript them!
I like the version 4.2 for Windows on my OS 7 PC system. Hade to much trouble with vers. 5 beta, so I must uninstall it. Exist a revised version with voice and video?
February 13th, 2011 at 12:22 am
I hope you will change your mind about including OpenCandy into Trillian. I like your product, and have no problem paying for it, but I will _never_ install a version with OpenCandy. If it’s put into a version I’ve already paid for, I will ask for a refund; if I don’t get it, I will consider it fraud.
February 13th, 2011 at 6:04 am
Opencandy is marked as ADWARE here, which means every virus scanner worth its name will delete it on sight.
Seriously, a very very bad move guys.
Get rid of that shit if you want us to keep using trillian.
February 14th, 2011 at 6:43 am
Big fail. My Microsoft Security Essentials warns me that there is a security thread!
Thinking about removing Trillian because of that OpenCandy crap.
February 15th, 2011 at 8:10 am
Yeah, MSE warned me also about Trillian 5.0.0.29 install as Adware:Win32/OpenCandy I understand that you want to make revenue etc, but anything that triggers security alert makes me wonder whether you have end user privacy in mind.
February 17th, 2011 at 3:45 am
So by now I’ve also got that MSE warning about an Adware infection coming with the bundled Trillian 5 installer. So basically, that seems to be a very bad move of the Trillian developers. Even though you make money with this bundle you will pretty much scare a lot of people away from Trillian, because almost none wants to install software that comes with an included virus alert.
Anyway, am I right in the presumption that it is a false alert? I didn’t install any additional software during the installation progress of Trillian. Still I get this alert, must I think about adware on my PC now?
P.S. I might just switch back to Trillian 4 again. I cannot really appreciate a piece of software that causes worries about malware.
February 19th, 2011 at 2:57 pm
MSE should remove both the installer and the dll file left in your %TEMP% directory, but don’t forget to manually remove the registry keys created during installation as well!
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Wow6432Node\Trillian\OpenCandy
And Leo, it’s NOT a false alert; OpenCandy is true adware even as the official site tries its best to convince you that it is not ‘malicious’ as you might think.
February 22nd, 2011 at 11:28 am
MSE detects OpenCandy in the trillian v4.2.0.23 installer as well, so switching back to Trillian 4 might not help…
I agree that including OpenCandy adware in the installer with no option to not install it is a HORRIBLE decision.
March 22nd, 2011 at 11:00 am
Not happy about OpenCandy. If this is the direction Trillian is going, I don’t want to be along for the ride. Trillian is convenient, but I’m not convinced it’s worth having adware installed for.
March 29th, 2011 at 5:33 pm
OpenCandy?!?!?! Really? Sorry cerulean, you’ve lost a long time customer. I feel bad that I’ve recommended your product to my friends and family for the past 7 years. Off to find an alternative.
